I don't think I've talked enough about temping... I think it has gotten a bad rap.. And maybe it’s true for someone who has spent the last 20 years in different contract roles despite their attempting to win a permanent job. But for most of the people I work with- temping is a fabulous solution to a lot of the obstacles in the job search.
Take Taylor for example. She had been working with Stacie for almost a year, because she knew where she wanted to be, but her background just wasn't getting her there... so she took a shot and started temping. She was working with some of our favorite clients who loved her, but unfortunately couldn't bring her on full time due to budget issues- issues they were hoping to get resolved but ultimately, it left Taylor temping. Because Taylor took that route, she was hired this week at a WONDERFUL consulting firm in Cambridge. She now has a permanent job, in a sick company, with an even SICKER salary. She essentially leap frogged some candidates we met around the same time who never gave temping a shot, and who are in jobs they hate, still waitressing, or even worse, who have been looking and not working since they started.
Speaking of temping.... I need to give a HUGE shout out to Ciara who got the temp job of dreams and started today. Ciara's job search is perfect for the temp route, because she wants to be in the marketing and communications field- but the competition is just so rough for those roles, especially for permanent positions. First because many companies will take their admin who they love and is interested in marketing to fill their open marketing assistant position, and then will find another admin from outside. Second, because everyone and their mother are trying to "get into marketing/events/communications- because its their passion". In this way, passion can only get you so far. "If you want big rewards, you gotta take big risks"- or be ready to get what you get.
Again, Congrats to Taylor and Ciara for taking their job search into their own hands and making their own path!! You go, girls. ;)
